Hanukkah

This year, the first night of Hanukkah falls on
Tuesday evening, December 20, 2011 at sundown.

Please join us at Shabbat services on
Friday evening, December 23 at 8:00 p.m. at the
Winnetka Community House (620 Lincoln Avenue, Winnetka) for a
beautiful Hakafa tradition as we celebrate Hanukkah and Shabbat.
Bring you chanukiot (Hanukkah menorahs), candles, and matches,
and help us celebrate Hanukkah as a community.
A special Hanukkah oneg will follow.

What is Hanukkah
The Hebrew word, Hanukkah, means "dedication."  Hanukkah is a joyous eight-day celebration during which the Jewish people commemorate the victory of the Maccabees over the armies of Syria in 165 B.C.E. and the subsequent liberation and "rededication" of the Temple in Jerusalem.

Hanukkah Traditions
The celebration of Hanukkah centers around the lighting of Hanukkah candles in the chanukiah (Hanukkah menorah), eating fried foods like potato latkes (pancakes), and sufganiyot (doughnuts), and playing the dreidel game and singing Hanukkah songs.
